I truly cant believe that NGY has been spreading the gift of kids yoga for 10 years now. It warms my heart to reminisce of the many kids, teachers and families whose lives we have touched. Because of all the teachers I have trained, that many more kids receive the gift to yoga. It is an ever-evolving phenomenon that continues to grow and expand through the world.
My personal mission…more kids do yoga so that we are unified and the world becomes a better place each and every day!
There is no doubt about it…peace is the way. I just read the Chopra Newsletter and the theme this month is Peace. How timely - Deepak mentions that at this present moment, June 2008, “there are 41 armed military conflicts being fought around the world.” WOW, I say!! We need peace. But how can we have peace in the world, if we don’t start with peace within us.
Dr. David Simon included an article on this subject and asks the question: “What if the purpose in life was to expand our happiness?” He continues “we’d teach our children to make choices based upon what brought them joy, love, and meaning. We would teach them not to waste time in repetitive behaviors that constrict their hearts and numb their souls. We’d use words in their presence like bliss, delight, euphoria, and ecstasy and would teach them through our choices that the best way to serve God is to expand happiness.”
I recently started to teach a kids yoga class at a school where where Peace is the way in their daily education. The Wisdom for Life School in Encinitas, California at Seaside Church for Spiritual Living, is a unique elementary school with an integrated curriculum, experiential learning and heart-centered teaching. Not only is the physical environment beautiful (ocean views from the classrooms!) but the classrooms are completely decorated with the kids work. Bulletin boards ask questions like…”how can I help to make the world a better place? and “Consider what the problem is, then ask how can I help the problem.” There are prayer flags, peace rocks and meditation gardens, yoga mats and pillows. Children learn about cooperation vs. competition. They meditate, grow organic food, and now yoga with me!
Of course this school is not for everyone, yet I am encouraged and inspired to know that it exists and share with you.
